Longitude and Latitude Map

4.1 Students demonstrate an understanding of the physical and human geographic features that define places and regions in California.

Explain and use the coordinate grid system of latitude and longitude to determine the absolute locations of places in California and on Earth.

Distinguish between the North and South Poles; the equator and the prime meridian; the tropics; and the hemispheres, using coordinates to plot locations.

Getting to the right destination is needed whether you are an astronaut, marine biologist, or just wanting to go on your own adventure. Using Longitude and Latitude will help you find locations around the world.

First, let’s go to the following website to play a fun game to practice your skills in using Longitude and Latitude.

After you have played that game, then let’s use coordinates on our Longitude and Latitude Map. Go to our next website, Today in Earthquake History, to plot the location of an earthquake that occured using your birthday as the requested date. Using the coordinates given put a star on its location on the map.

Finally, let’s go see how to young adventureres, Rob Gauntlett and James Hooper, take a journey from the North Pole to the South Pole. Plot their journey on your map and look at three of their video diaries they have posted from various locations along their route.
